This is a sideshow with the audio of the "Around The Barn" interview done Saturday morning 3-31-12. Fun interview that is about 8 minutes long.
The Lucas Sisters - Trick Riders & Stuntwomen
Shirley and Sharon as The Lucas Sisters were the premier trick riders and stuntwomen of the late 1940s through the 1950s. Shirley retired in 1958 and Sharon carried on into the late 1960s. This site is dedicated to their careers and their continuing legacy of dreaming big, hard work, family and friends, and the western way of life.

The Old Paint Mare
Shirley wrote this some time ago and wanted to share it here!
The Old Paint Mare
By Shirley Lucas Jauregui
She was a spotted old mare
They said she was rare
Fat and slick as a seal.
She had a Roman nose
And one blue eye
And when she bucked out
She would squeal.
If I buck off this old dame
It would be a real shame
"Cause I could win the day money
you see.
As she stood in the chute
I was counting my loot
And now it's all up to me.
They pulled up the cinch
She didn't flinch
Just stood there rolling her eyes.
I eased down in the saddle
And was full of straddle
When I got the feel of her sides.
They opened the gate
To reveal my fate on this old high buckin' gal
Spurs in the shoulder, reins held high
Now the eight second time will tell.
Like a bolt out of the blue
That old mare flew
Through the air we did soar.
I got in time
And was doin' fine
And, oh, how the crowd did roar.
Then all of a sudden
The lights went out
I thought I'd been kicked in the head.
Blind as a bat
I groped about
Then finally the announcer said,
"It's a black out folks
Just keep your seats
We'll give you your money back.
And the cowboy ridin' the
Old paint mare
Will get her again in the slack."
(This poem was written was written when California was having electrical problems statewide and we never knew when there would be a blackout!)

A Book For All Ages
There have been many books signed and sent on to new homes. It is always exciting to learn who the new owner will be. All the books get signed and then the buyer's name is written in my notebook so I'll always know where the books were sent.
Recently I received a copy of the speech written by an eleven year old who read "It Takes A Good Horse", the story of The Lucas Sisters. It touched me so much that I wanted to include it here. I'm so pleased when I hear that someone enjoyed our story, but it is really wonderful when a youngster enjoys it, too!
I hope you enjoy the speech as much as I did. It Takes A Good Horse is truly a book for all ages!
Here is the link to the speech.

The Last Books!
Well, we made it past Christmas with just 60 books left! Thanks to all of you who have ordered books. We have heard lots of wonderful comments from those who have had the time to read it. It still amazes me that Sharon and my story is in a book and so many have enjoyed reading it. We will be happy to find homes for these remaining books - order today! And again, thanks to all who have already gotten their copy!

Going, going, GONE!
We are quickly approaching the 200 mark of books sold. And that's in a week's time! Thanks so much to all who have gotten a book for themselves or for a special someone as a gift. I often think of all of those books under the Christmas tree - and being opened on Christmas Day! I'm so pleased and honored that you chose to make Sharon and my story part of your holiday. The bad news is that the window to ship books any distance is quickly closing. At the post office today I was told to only ship by Priority Mail as any other way would not make it for Christmas. We will still ship books, but don't plan on them making it before next week!
Merry Christmas to all!
Merry Christmas to all!

Book Orders
Thanks so much for all the good wishes and support on the book. Thanks a bunch to all those of you who have ordered!
For those of you who have asked, the book is 172 pages long filled with the events in Sharon and my life growing up in Oklahoma and traveling to California where we realized our dream to become rodeo trick riders. We traveled all over the west and preformed at all the major rodeos. We then went on to become motion picture stuntwomen. The book is a fun read for all ages - and most will find it inspiring as they begin to live - or relive - their own dreams!
When you order, please look for the "note to seller" link on the paypal site and let me know if you would like a message when I sign the book! Hope all of you have a blessed Christmas!

Here We Go!
The book is here, the book is here! I'm so happy to announce that the book, It Takes A Good Horse, is finally here and ready to sign and ship. I'm extremely proud of this book - Jostens did an amazing job of printing and binding - and yes I did tear up upon seeing it "in person". This has been such a labor of love and I so appreciate all of you who have supported me throughout the "birthing" process. If you are interested in having a copy of your own, please select the buy button to your right. It will take you to Paypal where you can use your Paypal account or any credit card to purchase the book. The first one hundred will be numbered and signed. Just leave your information in the note box at Paypal and I will endorse your book and sign it! Thanks again for your love and support. I just can hardly believe I have the finished copies in my hands!

Getting Closer!
The manuscript is finished, index and all! Shirley has been a real trooper in keeping this project moving forward. Many thanks to Dave Comstock at the Comstock Bonanza Press for all his patience to get the manuscript to this point. Now we are finalizing the cover - who knew it would be such a complex process to "birth this baby"! Shirley came up with the cover design and Ed Ten Eyke translated it into a Photoshop image. Dave will then prepare it in a format that the printer will accept and we are on our way to having a real book in our hands! Stay tuned as we will have a date for book availability in just a week or so!

On to the design!
We have moved on to the design of the interior of the book. Another learning process. Now it's all about font styles, sizes, and spacing. All the photos have been handled and critiqued. Only so many can be used and narrowing down to the select few is difficult! And we haven't even talked about the cover yet! Still trying to come up with the "right" title. Thinking seriously about "Always Check Your Cinch" but not really sure yet! We hope to send it to the printer by mid August. We are told it is a 4 week turn around so the deadline looms!
